Dextran Sulfates

Dextran sulfate is a common additive in cell culture media where it is often used as an anti-coagulant. Aggregations of cells affects cell growth, nutrient transports, proliferation and obstructs cell counting and monitoring. Dextran sulfate in combination with trypsin was shown to diminish cell-aggregation during culture of Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells (1). Dextran sulfate has also shown to inhibit apoptosis and increase protein production in CHO cells (2) when used as an additive in cell media.
